Why late summer and early fall is the buy window

Next-model-year vehicles reach dealers on a staggered schedule, mostly from August through October. Labor Day weekend is the traditional kickoff of that fall sell-off, and it happens to line up with automakers closing out their third-quarter sales numbers. That is why "the 2027s are coming" and "the 2026s are on sale" are the same sentence.

The other strong window: the end of the year

December brings the same dynamic a second time. Year-end and end-of-quarter targets, plus remaining current-year inventory, make late December another period when new-car pricing is at its most flexible. Between the two, late summer usually has the widest selection of leftover models, while year-end can have the sharpest single deals on what is left.

Leftover current-year model, or wait for the new one?

For most buyers, a leftover current-year model bought during clearance is the better value: it is typically discounted more than the incoming year and carries the exact same new-vehicle warranty. Waiting for the newest model year mainly pays off when it is a full redesign or you specifically want a new feature or powertrain. The easiest way to decide is to see both side by side, which is something a franchise dealer with an on-lot inventory can do that a search screen cannot.
